In her 51st book, Monica Buonfiglio rescues the story of the Patroness of the Brazilian Army, Maria Quitéria de Jesus, our heroine of Independence, who stood out as a soldier to free Brazil from the Portuguese yoke. For this feat, since her father had forbidden her to go to war, she became the “soldier Medeiros”, joining the Artillery Regiment of the Battalion of the Parakeets. Probably Guimarães Rosa was inspired by Maria Quitéria to write the character Diadorim, in her book, Grande Sertão: Veredas (1956).
Maria Quitéria not only fought bravely in the War of Independence, but sought, with her participation, the equality of women in society. He performed with prominence in several battles, among them, in the defense of the island of Maré, Conceição, Pituba and Itapoã for the decisive fight in the Battle of Pirajá where finally Brazil freed itself from the Portuguese presence on July 2, 1823, this day celebrated as Independência da Bahia.
With honors of 1st cadet, she was received by the emperor D. Pedro 1st who decorated her with the Imperial Order of the Cruise, for her bravery in the face of enemy troops. She also received the titles of Heroin of Independence of Brazil, Cadet of Independence, Joana d'Arc, in addition to being the Patron of the Complementary Staff of Army Officers.
